Review: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The Fault in Our Stars

Author: John Green

Publication Date: January 10th, 2012

Publisher: Dutton Books

Genre: Realistic Fiction

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.

My Thoughts: John Green is a literary genius. I had never read one of his books before, but I will definitely be adding more  to my TBR list, which is growing faster than it goes down. The Fault in Our Stars is heart wrenching. I had to keep stopping because I was starting to cry and couldn't continue reading.

I don't want to say too much about the storyline because I want each and every one of you, who haven't read this masterpiece, to go read it, and I don't want to ruin it for you. All I'm going to say is I thought I knew what was going to happen, I was completely wrong! So this story is fairly unpredictable, but quite enjoyable. I laughed, I cried and I fell in love with the characters.

First we have Hazel, she has a pretty shitty life. When you can't breathe on your own, life sucks. But, she tries not to let it get her down  too much, but with her diagnosis, there is no cure, it's just a countdown to when she dies, not if. So, she tries to limit how many people can be close to her, then when she dies there won't be so many people hurt.

Then she meets Augustus. He's a hottie and is completely obsessed with her. she tries not to let him get too close, but how long can  a girl keep a hot guy at bay, a guy who does everything in his power to turn the tide in his favour? It's only a matter of time until she falls for him, but she doesn't want to hurt him, she's a ticking bomb after all.

I love the way both Hazel and Augustus talk. They talk more maturely than the teenagers they are, but they had to grow up fast, so it's not surprising. They are both strong characters that are hard not to fall in love with. When I first started reading the book, I knew there would be heartbreak, but there is also lots of love and laughs. These two both seem so nonchalant about the future and want to live the best that they can now. The end is inevitable, but how you live your life can make all the difference. The characters make this book amazing, and they are extremely well written.

I definitely recommend this book, it's just something everyone should read. Whether you read YA, adult, paranormal, contemporary; you should read this.

  3. Great review! I love John Green and his books. I first read Looking for Alaska for my YA Lit. course and I've been addicted ever since. An Abundance is a fun read and Paper Towns has been my favorite for awhile, but TFiOS is in a tie at the moment. I might need to do some re-reading. :)

  4. I have never heard of John Green and I'm from Indianapolis! I saw several magazine reviews on this book so I purchased. It was a fantastic read. The characters were well written and hugely relatable. I laughed and cried throughout this story and loved Hazel. I read it so quickly that I can't wait to read again. And again. I also can't wait to read more from John!

  5. I have never read one of John Green's books, but I rarely hear anything that isn't just completely positive. I want so much to read this book, but just knowing that there is heartbreak coming tends to scare me away. It's nice to hear in your review that the heartbreak is balanced well with laughter and happiness. I would love nothing more than to go pick up this book right now and start reading, but I have to admit to being a little scared. I am going through stuff right now that is hard and sad, and I don't know if there is enough happiness to help me through the heartbreak in the end. Sigh! I will probably end up losing the battle and reading this before too long! Thanks so much for your review!

    1. I wish I could say I never cry, but I'm super emotional while reading..lol I get so engrossed in a good book that anything upsetting will trigger tears. This one was pretty bad for it though! He is amazing!

  8. I am 37 years old, and I have never in my life sat down and read an entire book in one day... until I picked up The Fault in Our Stars. It's a good thing my husband was home that night, or I probably would have fed my kid popsicles and crackers for dinner. No way was I putting the book down until I turned the very last page. Amazing book! If I am ever elected president, this book is going to be required reading. For everyone.
