Review& Giveaway: Hysteria by Megan Miranda

Hysteria

Author: Megan Miranda

Publication Date: February 14th, 2013

Publisher: Bloomsbury Children's

Genre: YA/Paranormal/Thriller

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Mallory's life is falling apart. Her boyfriend was stabbed. He bled to death in her kitchen. Mallory was the one who stabbed him. But she can't remember what happened that night. She only remembers the fear... When Mallory's parents send her away to a boarding school, she thinks she can escape the gossip and the threats. But someone, or something, has followed her. There's the hand that touches her shoulder when she's drifting off to sleep. A voice whispering her name. And everyone knows what happened. So when a pupil is found dead, Mallory's name is on their lips. Her past can be forgotten but it's never gone. Can Mallory live with that?

My Thoughts: This book was so creepy and scary in all the most perfect ways. I was not expecting it to be so unsettling and eerie, but I was oh so pleasantly surprised.

Mallory has to be the unluckiest young woman on the face of the earth. She just seems to be in all the wrong places in all the wrong times. She keeps getting dealt the worst luck imaginable and she exists under a persistant rain cloud of darkness.

I read this book in under 24 hours, and it's not that long so I guess that' not too impressive. But I just could not put it down. I could not stop reading! Every page was so full of  anxiety and anticipation, like it was dripping off the pages themselves. I could never be sure what would happen next and if I thought I might know, I was never right. I spent the majority of the story thinking to myself; What? Why did that happen?! How did that Happen?! But then what happened next?! Why would they do that?! and all such phrases.

Watching the story unfold through pieces and events past and present was extraordinary. Megan Miranda wrote this masterpiece of a puzzle like thriller that even the main character couldn't piece together or predict any outcome on. Even though the whole thing is about her and her seriously unlucky life. The spooky factors and awesome scary touches just made this story all that much more amazing. It's been a little while since I read a book in less than a day. And  I love chancing upon the books that just suck you in like that. Like there is nothing more important than seeing what happens on that next page, or if the answers to your questions are in the next chapter.

This book is thriller-ific. You will open this book and you will find yourself incapable of putting it down , at least for any amount of time, before you're running back to it because you can't wait to find out  what Mallory's story really is, or what else could possibly go wrong for her, or what she will do to get out of this insane mess she's in. I don't think any  one has a story to tell like her own. Megan Miranda needs to be applauded for her well thought out, deliciously written story.

It felt like every single sentence mattered. Everything had a meaning, and everything you read later evolved into something else that left you shocked and most likely even more confused or intrigued. It was an  awesome fast paced read and a definite read for 2013.

Review: Fracture by Megan Miranda

Fracture
(Fracture #1)

Author: Megan Miranda

Publication Date: January 5th 2012

Publisher: Walker Childrens

Genre: Paranormal

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can't control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?

Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she's reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy's motives aren't quite what she thought. Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening?

My Thoughts: So I had been meaning to read this for a long time, but as usual, kept putting it off. I'm glad that I did finally get around to reading it because it was a really good book. I really like Megan Miranda's writing style and pretty much had the book in my hand all day. It was a pretty quick read for me, and I was able to finish it in less than a day. It is a different type of read than what I've mostly been reading lately *cough* dystopians *cough* so it was a nice break from that.

Fracture follows Delaney, a teenager who fell through the ice and was dead for 11 minutes. It's a miracle that she's alive, but now she seems to be able to sense when someone is going to die. It takes awhile before she realizes that what's going on, but once she does, she dreads the feeling more than she had previously. Then she meets Troy Varga, someone who can she can relate to because he has the same abilities. But Troy has some dark secrets which are pretty horrible. Delaney feels like she has no one to turn to for help. Her mom is shutting down and barely talks to her. Her best friend, Decker, is spending all his time with someone else and Troy is the only one willing to talk about it. Delaney is lost and troubled, what can she really do?

Delaney is not your typical YA heroine. She's not really that tough or brave. Heck, she almost died. She's not popular or in great shape but is pretty. But not in the way most female protagonists are, which is absolutely gorgeous. She doesn't fall for the guy right away, although her judgement may not be the best at first. She's smart and a bit of a bookworm, although she gets headaches reading after her accident (that would be terrible!). Nope, Delaney is just an average teenage girl who senses death. Completely likable and easy for me to relate to, except for the death thing.

There are two love interests in Fracture. There is Decker, the boy next door who has been her best friend since she was 5. They both love each other but neither seems to act on it. Then after her death, Decker seems to drift away, jerk! Then there is Troy, the mysterious boy whom nobody seems to know anything about. He's new in town and also senses death. He's a bit scary though and I thought Delaney was stupid for even considering him.  He's pretty creepy. I was definitely hoping Decker would stop being stupid and realize that Delaney loved him.

Overall, Fracture was a fresh read. Definitely a great debut novel for Megan Miranda. I will be looking out for more from her. It was easy to read and addicting. I definitely recommend it!

My Thoughts: I really wanted to read this book since the moment I discovered it on goodreads shortly after it's release. It did not fail to please!

This is the kind of story where I really can't talk much about the story line at all, I don't want to give anything away. I went into this story with a rough idea of what I thought would take place, and I was completely, and pleasantly, surprised instead. The story carries some great unexpected details that I would hate to spoil, it  is much more fun to discover them on your own. I will, however, say that I really enjoyed Megan Miranda's writing style. Everything was pretty to the point, like every line spoken, and every event had a direct relation to the story line. I find a lot of stories carry lots of filler, meaningless dialogue or unimportant events, this story has none of that. Everything that happens, happens for a reason, it's 100% great story line.

The story is told by Delaney, the main character, and may I just say that I really love her name! In fact I found that the 3 most important characters in the story had pleasantly unique names, them being Delaney, Decker, and Troy. Decker is Delaney's best friend since childhood, they've done everything together, he is also the one who pulled her out of the lake and saved her life. Upon almost losing her, Decker realizes just how important she is, and what his feelings toward her really are, and in comes our love story, or in this case, more like a love battle, but again I won't splurge details, you will have to read for yourself to see what I mean. Troy, is a very mysterious, seriously creepy, guy that shares Delaney's near death experience, and also shares the same results. That being that they are literally pulled towards death, they can feel when people are going to die. Things are a roller coaster with Troy, at first Delaney is pretty pleased to find someone she can talk to about this un-explainable craziness, of course she has told no one about what is happening to her. But after some time, she discovers that they don't really see their abilities in the same light...

I think that Megan Miranda did a great job personifying a teenager, Delaney, in this story. Her thoughts, and outlook, and mannerisms, and actions, are all bang on. It doesn't feel forced, she's a very real character is the best word I can find to describe her. As well, Decker was a pretty strong character, I would say I could almost feel his presence, his emotions concerning Delaney or almost a force to be reckoned with, I could feel his energy, like a solid, protective presence, coming off the pages. Then there is Troy, he was a tricky character indeed, at times I couldn't tell  if he was the good guy, or the bad guy, someone to be pitied, or just a certifiably crazy person. It all comes together in the end, and we discover what kind of person he really is, but I'm not telling! There were times in the story that I was seriously creeped out, this book definitely has it's eerie moments, and I really enjoyed them!

You hear all the time about people having near death experiences and they come back with this renewed vigor and lust for life, and they perceive everything as just so wonderful. That is definitely not the case for Delaney, it's pretty much a downward spiral for her as soon as she wakes up from her coma. This story is like a great example of, you don't know what you got until it's gone, as Delaney starts to lose everyone and everything that was a big part of her life, and all because of what happened to her. There were times when I'm sure if I was her I would have given up, but she definitely has determination, and strength!

Sometimes when reading a book, I come across a line that really jumps out at me, it's either meaningful or I just really like/ find it well written. And I will sit there and read it a couple times and just think about how awesome it is. I usually write them down and save them. I found one in this book that I thought was just plain great, I'll share it with you as a little excerpt/taste test/sneak peek.

"He dragged me through the house, and I let him, because I wasn't sure who I was scared of most at the moment. The stranger I was learning about to quickly, or the woman I'd known my entire life who was quickly becoming a stranger."
