Synopsis:

Zoey’s mettle will be tested like never before. Her best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead and struggling to maintain a grip on her humanity. Zoey doesn’t have a clue how to help her, but she does know that anything she and Stevie Rae discover must be kept secret from everyone else at the House of Night, where trust has become a rare commodity. Speaking of rare: Zoey finds herself in the very unexpected and rare position of having three boyfriends. Mix a little bloodlust into the equation and the situation has the potential to spell social disaster. Just when it seems things couldn’t get any tougher, vampyres start turning up dead. Really dead. It looks like the People of Faith, and Zoey’s horrid step-father in particular, are tired of living side-by-side with vampyres. But, as Zoey and her friends so often find out, how things appear rarely reflects the truth…

My Thoughts: Blahhh, that's pretty much how I feel after reading this book. I feel like  I could just make that one word summarize completely how I feel about this book.

I had been pleased with Betrayed because it seemed like Zoey was maturing and turning into a much better person. But book #3 here completely dashed all hopes of that for me. I don't think I have ever been so frustrated with a main character before. I mean, I don't know if we're supposed to dislike her, but I don't see how anyone could not. But even when I tend to dislike a character in a book, or think they are just overall a bad person. I still usually respect the depth and work put into the character to make me feel that way. But in this case, I feel Zoey has the emotional range of a carrot, considerably low intelligence, and not to mention extremely selfish.

I am sure I am making a lot of people upset by saying these things because as far as I've seen this series is pretty popular. But keep in mind, this is simply how I feel, and I can provide reasons for feeling this way.

So here is why I don't like Zoey. Let's start with her friends. She has this group of friends who are incredibly nice to her, extremely generous, they go out of their way to help and please her continuously though out the book. And she does jack all for them in return. She is constantly brushing them off, running away from them, being rude to them, and lying to them. This is not how friendships should work and she has done nothing to deserve the kindness shown to her. Then there's the boyfriend(s) issue. I know love triangles are common, and I'm not against them. I'm as much a sucker for them as the next person. But there is a difference between a love triangle, being torn between who you love more, and flat out  cheating, being selfish, and easy. This frustrated me to no end. Not only did I find it to be incredibly poor character, but it got so old and annoying really fast. Every chapter she thinks "oh I really have to break up with one of these guys". Then the next time she sees one of them. She's all over them like flies on stink and completely forgetting about anything except what Zoey wants and what pleases Zoey. Then she will laugh to herself and think " Oh I'm such a ho". Seriously?! And she is always making these little comments to herself, that to me just prove how insensitive and self centered, and ditsy she is. In every chapter she has to remind us she is such a freaking nerd or geek, because she likes harry potter, or because she watched Star Wars. So anyway, that's just some of the reasons I don't like Zoey. I think I've justified myself.

But I still can't say the book is bad. The story line is still OK, although I found this one to be less interesting as the ones before it. I feel like these book have the potential to be so much better than they are. And I am sad that I don't enjoy as much as everyone else seems to. A lot comes to a head at the end of this book, and things aren't really looking the best for Zoey. All I could think though, was that she completely deserved everything, and all her heart ache was pretty much her own fault.  I'm not giving up on this series yet. I still own two more books in the series and I am going to read them and just hope that Zoey's character will develop a decent personality or some maturity. Because as I said, I do like the actual story. But it's really hard to enjoy the book when the main character gets on your  nerves so much.

Teaser:

In one heartbeat, I consider tearing it in half, ripping it apart like a pair of butterfly wings, just for the satisfaction of ruining the symmetry. God, I hate that bony face, those eye-pits, that block of teeth. And yet I roll the paper into a careful scroll and tuck it into my bag, sure not to bed it.

My Thoughts: I got this e-book for free a little while back and I've actually been meaning to read it. I'm really enjoying it so far and I find the main character very relate-able with her quirky personality :).

Review: 'Til The World Ends

'Til The World Ends

Author: Julie Kagawa, Ann Aguirre, Karen Duvall

Publication Date: January 29th 2013

Publisher: Harlequin Luna

Genre: Anthologies / Post-Apocolyptic

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Dawn of Eden by Julie Kagawa

Before The Immortal Rules, there was the Red Lung, a relentless virus determined to take out all in its path. For Kylie, the miracle of her survival is also her burden-as a doctor at one of the clinics for the infected, she is forced to witness endless suffering. What's worse, strange things are happening to the remains of the dead, and by the time she befriends Ben Archer, she's beginning to wonder if a global pandemic is the least of her problems....

Thistle & Thorne by Ann Aguirre

After a catastrophic spill turns the country into a vast chemical wasteland, those who could afford it retreated to fortresses, self-contained communities run by powerful corporations. But for Mari Thistle, life on the outside-in the Red Zone-is a constant struggle. To protect her family, Mari teams up with the mysterious Thorne Goodman. Together, they'll face an evil plot in both the underworld of the Red Zone and the society inside the fortresses that could destroy those on the outside...for good.

Sun Storm by Karen Duvall

Sarah Daggot has been chasing storms since she was a child. But after the biggest solar flares in history nearly destroy the planet, she becomes a Kinetic, endowed by her exposure to extreme radiation with the power to sense coming storms-in the cosmos and beyond. And she's not the only one. Sarah believes the Kinetics are destined to join forces and halt the final onslaught of the sun. She'll vow to keep trying to convince the one missing link in their chain of defense, the enigmatic Ian Matthews, up until the world ends.

My Thoughts: This is my first time reading a set of anthologies and I actually liked it. It's kind of neat to get a bit of a taste of a few different authors. I will admit that I, like everyone else, requested this one from NetGalley because of Julie Kagawa, but I actually really enjoyed the other stories as well.

So the first story, Dawn of Eden, was the one I was most looking forward to because I loved The Immortal Rules. I'm going to start out by saying while I really enjoyed it, it is NOT young adult. There is a very steamy sex scene in it. Extremely descriptive, and while I won't say I hated the scene, it just shocked me immensely because I wasn't expecting it at all. So I was just a bit confused because The Immortal Rules is a YA, so I would only assume that people who enjoy it will want to read everything to do with the series, so it just concerns me that some young teen will read this, I know I wouldn't want my daughter to read this as a teen. I know it is up to the parent to screen these things, but they might not think to do it for all of the books in a series. I don't know, just my thoughts. It was very well written though, makes me kind of hope that Julie will write more adult content for a new series, or something. I liked getting a glimpse of how the Red Fever progressed and how the rabids came to be though. I'm not really going to say much, I don't want to give away much, but it's worth the read!

Thistle & Thorne was also a fairly good read, I was a bit confused when I started it, but quickly caught on and was able to visualize the world. This was my first taste of Ann Aguirre's writing, which is really bad because I've been wanting to read the Razorland series. But I will say that it was really enjoyable. I like that it seems to be a stand alone story because now I'm not sitting here waiting for the next story, I just know it's done (unless there is more I'm not aware of). I think after having read this, I will for sure be checking out more of her work. She does a great job with world building and character building, even with a short story. So that shows me that she has a way with words. I think if you were to pick up this anthology, you should definitely read this story as well! I liked the characters and how they didn't quite trust each other, and it kind of leaves you wondering a bit about them after, but that's good because it means you're still thinking about the story. It's pretty good!

Sun Storm is the third and final story in the anthology and I have to say that I really enjoyed this one. It was very easy to imagine the world because the world building was quite well done. I had a bit of an issue with the insta love thing that happened, but it was somewhat explained by the need the two characters had for each other, they are both Kinetics, so have survived the sun fever, a few of the lucky 16% (I believe it was). They are hated for surviving what kills nearly everyone else and have either very few or no family left. Sarah does what she can to help, and feels guilt for those she can't save. Ian is a janitor (very glamorous I know!) who is hiding something. The sun is sending deadly sun storms down to Earth, a large one is what caused the world to become as it is in the story, and there is always threat of more similar or worse. Sarah luckily has the power to predict the storms and Ian has the power to control the weather, but he's not sure if he can control a sun storm. I also enjoyed that this is a full short story, there is no prequel or sequels that tell more of the story. Since most books are series lately, it's nice to come across a stand alone. I really enjoyed this one!

So that's the anthology, I definitely recommend it if you're a fan of dystopians. Not only are there three great and well written stories, but chances are you will find an new author to check out. I found two!

Blog Tour: Breaking Point by Kristen Simmons

Breaking Point
(Article 5, #2)

Author: Kristen Simmons

Publication Date: February 2nd 2013

Publisher: Tor Teen

Genre: Dystopia

GoodReads

Synopsis:

After faking their deaths to escape from prison, Ember Miller and Chase Jennings have only one goal: to lay low until the Federal Bureau of Reformation forgets they ever existed.

Near-celebrities now for the increasingly sensationalized tales of their struggles with the government, Ember and Chase are recognized and taken in by the Resistance—an underground organization working to systematically take down the government. At headquarters, all eyes are on the sniper, an anonymous assassin taking out FBR soldiers one by one. Rumors are flying about the sniper’s true identity, and Ember and Chase welcome the diversion….

Until the government posts its most-wanted list, and their number one suspect is Ember herself.

Orders are shoot to kill, and soldiers are cleared to fire on suspicion alone. Suddenly Ember can’t even step onto the street without fear of being recognized, and “laying low” is a joke. Even members of the Resistance are starting to look at her sideways.

With Chase urging her to run, Ember must decide: Go into hiding…or fight back?

My Thoughts: I'm just going to start out by saying that I actually liked Breaking Point more than Article 5. I think I have finally come to terms with why Ember's mother was killed (not just because Ember was born, that was just their reason for bringing her in). However, there was ONE thing I didn't like about this one, which I will get to later. First of all, I just want to say a big thank you to Kristen for creating such an amazing and captivating series that I can vividly see in my mind as I'm reading. I mean, I was reading this after having very little sleep and normally reading will make me fall asleep. Not in this book. Once I was pulled into the story, which was at the beginning, I was hard-pressed to stop until it was done (even if I did have to because of other responsibilities. ie: kids and work).

So what was it that I hated in this one? Well, it wasn't the fact that it basically starts off where Article 5 ended (about a month later but not much has happened in that time). Ember and Chase are living with the resistance in Knoxville, Ember is afraid to go outside and the other resistance members resent her for it. The sniper is still at large and is in Knoxville. Then suddenly, the FBR  finds out that Ember isn't dead and they decide that she has something to do with the sniper attacks and add her to their most wanted lists. Ember is denying it and finally goes out on a mission so that people will see her and it will maybe boost their morale. After that, the action starts and it's all fast paced from there. Just when you are starting to think things are going to be okay for Ember, Tucker shows up, she and Chase are kicked out and shit hits the fan. So I definitely didn't hate the story line and it's action packed awesomeness.

Was it the romance aspect? Nope, I actually quite enjoyed watching Ember and Chase begin to repair their relationship after the bomb he threw into it, again, at the end of Article 5. I mean, he should have told her the truth, even if it was hard, but he didn't and now they have this wedge in between them since he was one of the last people to see her mother alive. He struggles with it as much as she does. He had no parents and Ember's mother made him feel like a welcome member of the family. They are slowly getting past this and their relationship is mending. Ember is keeping a secret from Chase about Tucker, but that goes better than his secret from before. Things are mending, even if they are always running for their lives and are always surrounded by other people. I think the romance is well done!

Also, in regards to Ember, she has changed so much! She was a naive little girl in Article 5, but in Breaking Point she has become so courageous and strong. She believes that things need to change and wants to give everyone hope. Even though she can be shot on sight, she still braves it and goes outside. She keeps her promises and is just an awesome protagonist all over!

I suppose now you're wondering what I didn't like. Well, the one thing I hate about Breaking Point is that I'm finished and now have to wait for the next book. It seems so cruel to have to wait. *goes and pouts in the corner* I love this series, it's amazing and the next book needs to come out now! Honestly, if you haven't read this series yet, you're missing out, it really is a dystopian that stands out amongst the surge of dystopians that have been coming out lately. You should read it. Nay, you need to read it! Go get it now and read it!

Review: Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke & Bone
Daughter of Smoke & Bone #1

Author: Laini Taylor

Publication Date: September 27, 2011

Publisher: Little, Brown and Company

Genre: Fantasy

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

My Thoughts:  A LOT of people love this book, most people it seems (including Jenn and Meghan check theirs out!).  So, I am not sure what happened with me.  Maybe going into the book my expectations were too high or I was expecting something entirely different.  In different places in the book, my reading stalled and I just couldn't get into it.  Something just jarred me out of the world and it took me awhile to get me back.

I really enjoyed the characters, all of them.  They had a lot of back story and were really developed.  I could feel for pretty much all of them.  It made me sad when anything bad happened to any of the characters in this book which really speaks for the author.  Her characters were well fleshed-out and pretty awesome.

The plot was a little too up in the air for this to be a book that I couldn't put down.  Most of the time (not all) I could just put it aside at the end of a chapter with no immediate need to find out what would happen next.  That doesn't mean this isn't a great book, just one that didn't create a sense of urgency about the plot and where it was going.

Karou I liked especially.  She was flawed in ways that were obvious to the reader which was a welcomed reprieve from the goody-innocentness (a word?  I think not lol) of the MC that I have been reading a lot recently.

I loved when the main characters first met and the fight scene ensued.  I felt it had real chemistry and could go somewhere.  After that, I felt a little let down.  It was pretty much an instantaneous love and it confused me a lot.  So, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and continued on thinking that it had something to do with Karou's mysterious past.  When I found out the truth behind it, I have to admit I was just as disappointed.  These two seem to just fall in love out of the blue with each other and it kind of irked me a little.

I did enjoy reading about the past, but I think I would have liked it more if it were slowly leaked to me.  The dedicated chapters of past just tore me out of the present and I found it jarring.

I liked the world that Taylor created.  It was interesting to learn about and read about it.  The chimera in particular were wonderful and I loved creating their likenesses in my head. If I were any sort of artist I probably would have scratched a couple down - especially Brimstone.

In short, it took me a long time to make it to this book - it seemed like I just kept putting it off.  I am still glad I finally picked it up and will probably read the next one.

Review: Betrayed by P.C & Kristin Cast

Betrayed

Author: P.C & Kristin Cast

Publication Date: October 2nd, 2007

Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin

Genre: YA/Paranormal/Romance

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird has managed to settle in at the House of Night. She's come to terms with the vast powers the vampyre goddess, Nyx, has given her, and is getting a handle on being the new Leader of the Dark Daughters. Best of all, Zoey finally feels like she belongs--like she really fits in. She actually has a boyfriend…or two. Then the unthinkable happens: Human teenagers are being killed, and all the evidence points to the House of Night. While danger stalks the humans from Zoey's old life, she begins to realize that the very powers that make her so unique might also threaten those she loves. Then, when she needs her new friends the most, death strikes the House of Night, and Zoey must find the courage to face a betrayal that could break her heart, her soul, and jeopardize the very fabric of her world.

My Thoughts: So if you read my review of Marked (here), then you know I'm not really a huge fan of the characters in this book. Zoey might have grown on me a little more, maybe. She did seem to mature slightly in this book. She made some good, solid decisions, and took strong positive action. But I'm still not won over. Hopefully I will like her a little more each book if it continues this way.

I enjoyed the plot line in this second book even more than the first, so in another way I like this series a little more. It was definitely darker and more twisted. What can I say, I'm kind of a fan of dark and twisted. Stephen King is after all my favorite author of all time :).  And I even began to like Aphrodite even more. I think this installment provided even more reason to like her, even though she's the "bad guy", but just maybe she isn't so bad after all.

So normally I like love triangles, don't we all? Even though they can be so heart breaking. But I for some reason, find the triangle in this story to be frustrating. I guess in love most love triangles, the guys are aware of each other, and the girl usually doesn't full on date both of them. But in this case whenever Zoey is with one of the, now three, guys she is crushing on. She tends to act like the other people who care about her don't even exist and does what Zoey wants.  I can understands her reasons for liking the different guys. But you seriously need to pick one, or at least stop stringing them along until you can decide.

Overall though, it is a good read. I love this new take on Vampires. It's fun and unique and the idea is brand new. It's got mystery, vampires, love and some lust, and tons of drama. They are also pretty easy quick reads, takes me about a day to read one of these, maybe a little more. I would recommend them because they are pretty unique and the story line is pretty great. Here's hoping book #3 will have me liking everyone even more :).

Review: Article 5 by Kristen Simmons

Article 5
(Article 5 #1)

Author: Kristen Simmons

Publication Date: January 31st 2012

Publisher: Tor Teen

Genre: Dystopia

GoodReads

Synopsis:

New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved.

My Thoughts: Okay, I know. I really should be giving this one a 5 owl rating but I just can't. Why? there was one thing that really irritated me, it was in the back of my mind from the time that Ember's mom got arrested, right up to the end of the book. Before I go into that though, this was a really great book and I can't wait to jump into Breaking Point, which will be soon since I'm in the blog tour for it :) Kristen Simmons is really great at creating a world that is easily imaginable and believable. I was getting chills at some of the things that happened, and it's not like a dystopian that the characters have been living like this their whole lives. The wars only ended a short while ago (3 years I think it was). Things have only been hard the past 8 years for the characters, so they know what a happy life was like.

Which brings me to the thing that I didn't like. Ember's mom is arrested for violating Article 5, which basically means she had a child out of wedlock and is a single mother. Right, but Ember is 17, which means they are arresting her for something that wasn't illegal at the time that it happened. It does eventually make sense, but I'm not going to go into that since it would be spoilery. But it bothered me the whole time, especially when you find out what her punishment was. Rediculous. But, that's what a dystopian society is all about I guess. Retroactive laws are a bit much though. Not that she really followed the laws, since she was used to a life that you could pretty much do what you want, read what you want, etc. But yeah, that's the only thing that bothered me about the story, but yeah, it was mean!

Alright, the rest of the story though, I loved. Ember really grows as a character, she goes from being obedient of the law to rebellious as she realizes just how stupid all of the laws are. So we see her come out of her shell and become stronger. she begins to stick up for herself and others, and does the right thing, even if she shouldn't. Then there is Chase, her first love. The one who drove the van arresting her mom. She can't bring herself to trust him since he's changed so much, but she has to once her life is in his hands. He's the enemy to her. He made her mom a promise though. I really like these two, but they have a lot to talk about still.

Overall, Article 5 is an amazing book. It leaves you wanting more at the end. Luckily for you, if you haven't read it yet, Breaking Point is coming out later this month, so it's not a long wait. If you have read it, well, it's coming out soon, so your wait is almost over! It really stands out in the dystopian genre. It's well written and you can really connect with the characters. It's a definite must read if you are a fan of dystopia. It's a great place to start if you haven't tried them yet. For sure one that I recommend and would get 4.5 owls if I did half ratings. It's a really great read that will keep you up until you finish it!
