Review: Phoenix by Elizabeth Richards

Phoenix
Black City #2

Author: Elizabeth Richards

Publication Date: June 4, 2013

Publisher: Putnam Juvenile

Genre: Dystopian

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Ash and Natalie are just starting to build a life together when things in the United Sentry States go from bad to worse. Ash and Natalie find themselves at the center of turmoil when dictator Purian Rose threatens Natalie’s life unless Ash votes in favor of Rose’s Law—a law that will send Darklings and other dissenters to a deadly concentration camp known as the Tenth.

When Ash can’t bring himself to trade Natalie’s life for those of millions of Darklings, her fate is sealed. Enter Elijah Theroux, the handsome Bastet boy Natalie once saved from her mother’s labs, where he’d been experimented on and tortured. It was his venom the Sentry used to create the lethal Golden Haze, the heart of the government conspiracy that led to Black City’s uprising and Ash’s rebirth as the Phoenix, the face of the rebellion. Elijah is back and Ash doesn’t like him; it’s clear he’s taken with Natalie, and Ash fears she may have feelings for him as well.

But Elijah also may have the answer to taking down Purian Rose for good—a powerful weapon called the Ora. Ash, Natalie and Elijah just have to escape Black City undetected to find it. But fleeing the city and finding this weapon (if it even exists) are easier said than done, and the quest could tear Ash and Natalie apart, even pushing them into the arms of others.

This enthralling sequel to Black City is just as absorbing, delicious and steamy as the first book, leaving readers hungry for the series conclusion.

My Thoughts:  I can't believe I waited so long to read this series.  I love the cover of Black City and just kept going back to it, but it was always side-tracked by something else.  I am so glad that I finally decided to pick this series up and give it a go.

First off, I want to really just thank the author for making such a fantastic world.  I haven't been more involved with a dystopian universe since I read The Hunger Games.  I was appalled at the state and conditions of Black City and the blatant discrimination, disregard for life and attempted genocide that these books really portray.  It sucked me in and left my emotions in turmoil for both Black City and Phoenix.

I also want to applaud Elizabeth Richards for not making either book predictable.  With all of the dystopian novels released (especially in the YA genre) nowadays it is hard to keep them fresh and full of surprises. Both Black City and Phoenix caught me off guard on multiple occasions and I could never figure out where we were going to end up - but boy, was it a fun ride.

At first, I wasn't sure what to make of both Ash and Natalie as characters.  It took me a chapter or two to warm up to them.  Now, I couldn't picture my fan-girl couplings without a dose of Natalie and Ash.  They are both fearless and fiercely protective of their friends, family and especially each other. I can't sing either of their praises more - they are perfectly imperfect and developed.

I absolutely love this series.  I can't wait for the third book to come out. I would follow this series through twenty books if I could convince Elizabeth Richards to write that many.  I love the characters and loathe the villains.  It is perfect.  Read it if you haven't picked it up yet - you will not be disappointed!

Review: Endless by Jessica Shirvington

Endless

Author: Jessica Shirvington

Publication Date: August 28, 2012

Publisher: Hachette

Genre: Fantasy/Angels

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Love will kill us all.
Angels are real. They aren't always kind. Violet Eden is certain of all this because she is Grigori - part angel, part human. She has felt the influence of both light and dark.
When Hell unleashes its worst, Violet must embrace every facet of her angel self to save the people she cares about and the world as she knows it. But death is not the worst thing that Violet will face. For her, the endless question 'Can love conquer all?' will finally be answered.

My Thoughts: I love this series so much that I have it imported to Canada from Australia, which happens to cost a bit of money, but it is SO worth it! This has to be my favourite book in the series so far. It is so full of hope, despair, heartache and love. I just finished it and I already want to pick it up and read it again.
Endless is the fourth book in The Violet Eden Chapters and I have to say, they just keep getting better and better. This is one of my all-time favourite angel series.

Violet Eden is a Grigori – a part-angel and part-human which can only happen under special circumstances. Over the course of the series she has faced so many obstacles and hurdles that I can`t believe that she is still willing to jump into the fray. She is stubborn, strong-willed and super independent – she reminds me of Rose Hathaway from Vampire Academy.

The men in this series are to die for as well; every single man, whether they are a love-interest or not. They are all handsome and strong and stick by a code and their word. There is Lincoln, Violet’s Grigori partner (and love), Phoenix and all of the Grigori around them.

Violet has always had many tests to face and this book isn’t any different. But, the trials she has to face in this book push Violet to her limits and beyond. Almost every other book in this series seems like a cake walk in comparison to this one. I laughed; I cried (a lot); I was so emotional throughout the whole thing. By the time I was done I felt like I had just gotten off of a rollercoaster. But, man, was it a good ride.

This book has to be the best in the series so far and I love it to pieces. I just want to go back to the first book and read through it all over again. I love it!

Review: Phoenix by Jennifer Mason-Black

Phoenix

Author: Jennifer Mason-Black

Publication Date: May 11th, 2012

Publisher: Musa Publishing

Genre: YA

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Would you recognize hope if you looked into its eyes? At sixteen, Tucker has nothing but the clothes on his back, the bruises on his ribs, and the truth about what happened between him and the band teacher. He left home looking to escape his memories, but all he’s found on the road are new bad ones to take their place. Then he meets Gabriel, a beautiful hustler, and Kelsey, a fire-obsessed girl with a head full of fairy tales. After Gabriel rescues him from a pair of drunks looking for a fight, Tucker’s happy to join him in the abandoned factory he calls home. All he must do in return is help keep Kelsey safe. But Kelsey’s not what Tucker thinks she is, and safety isn’t what she needs from him. To help her, he’ll have to face the secret he’s been running from, and the flames she’s running to find.

My Thoughts: I absolutely loved this book. The entire thing read like this beautiful poem. Everything about it, every line written was beautiful, meaningful, and packed a punch. It's a short, but really great read and I seriously think everyone should probably read it.

I'll be honest and say I initially picked this book to review because it's called Phoenix, which just happens to be my oldest son's name. But wow am I ever glad I did pick it! I can't really say a whole lot because it was such a short story. But I know that I will be looking out for more of Jennifer's work for sure. She has some incredible talent! Her writing style is not one you encounter often, she has a way with words that left me reeling.

The story focuses on Tucker, a teenager thrown to the curb because he loves boys instead of girls. The entire story carries a tragedy about it, but at the same time it's somehow really wonderful. He by chance meets a young man and woman with whom he joins forces. The woman, Kelsey, has something wrong with her. She seems completely insane, but maybe that's not the case. Just maybe her nonsensical statements are based on truth and reality. Inexplicable things happen and Tucker is faced with the unbelievable, and yet finds himself a believer when Gabriel, the other male in the group, runs off and Tucker is left to protect Kelsey on his own.

Again I just want to say, this book was stunningly well written and I'm pretty sure I'll be reading it more than once. I really think everyone should read it. But I should say there are cases of sex and homosexuality, so if that isn't your thing maybe you shouldn't read it. On the other hand, it shouldn't matter, this book is beautiful, go read it! Thanks so much to Musa Publishing for the review copy!

"Stories need hope," she said. "Stories have room inside them for everything, for every bad thing that the world has ever known, but only when they have hope too. Just a little thing, just a bird singing when the morning comes. You know?"

This book so far has been a really great read, and I really just love this quote! I highlighted it and saved it and I knew it would be perfect to share with you guys for teaser Tuesday. Hope you like it as much as I do!

Waiting on Wednesday (28)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly awaiting.

by Jessica Shirvington
Expected Publication: September 2012 (AUS)

Summary: Love will kill us all.

Only the first of The Violet Eden series is released in North America (Embrace), but I will admit that I may have spent the extra shipping charges from Australia (= A LOT) to have number two and three shipped to Canada. I will probably do it for this one as well, so I am really looking forward to it!

If you haven't checked out Embrace, have a look!
