Synopsis:
The year is 1983. Christian is 22 years old when he leaves his home in Denmark to spend a year in Florida with a very wealthy family and go to med-school. A joyful night out with friends is shattered by an encounter with a savage predator that changes his life forever. Soon he faces challenges he had never expected. A supernatural gift he has no idea how to embrace. A haunting family in the house next door. A spirit-filled girl who seems to carry all the answers. An ancient secret hidden in the swamps of Florida. One life never the same. One love that becomes an obsession. Two destinies that will be forever entangled. My Thoughts: Okay, this book was a lot different than the books I normally read. It was based in the 80s (before cell phones and personal computers - eek!) and is told from a male-perspective. Christian is from Denmark and has moved to Florida to attend med school.
Apparently Christian is handsome, because he talks about breaking a lot of hearts back in his home country. With golden curls and being super talented on the guitar one can only guess why. He also doesn’t really seem to hesitate to jump into bed with women. But then again, most 22 year old men probably would do the same, I imagine.
Despite this book being out of the norm for me to read, I did rather enjoy it. It was a bit slow for me at times but it did pick back up here and there. I did find it a little unbelievable that a girl (not saying who) would meet Christian and then just let loose her whole family history in one giant paragraph though.
The characters in this book were either very intense or very out of the norm. I think that if there had been a comedic-relief character it would have made the book a quicker read for me. I always feel that when a book is this intense that it should have something to counter balance it.
I can’t wait to read the next in the series though, since it does jump about 15 years I believe from the last we see the main characters. Despite a few things that I would have enjoyed seeing different, I did like this book enough to finish it and want to read the next one.

OH the 80s! Cool! haha. I grew up without cell phones and computers - well they existed but they weren't super common still - high school in the 90s. I hadn't heard of this one before. Great review!
ReplyDeleteWe had computers, but cellphones weren't all that popular until about the year before I graduated. It certainly reminded me of some of the 90s sitcom lingo! Thanks! :)
DeleteLOL. I remember the 80s too! Good times...
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great review!
Thanks! I love reading about different times :D
DeleteThis sounds unique! I love an 80s setting. Makes things interesting when people don't have cell phones and internet to turn to. I also love books with characters in their 20s. A nice change from the high school drama. Very curious about the paranormal aspect and scary house next door. I also prefer to have some comic relief.
ReplyDeleteI guess the house next door was kind of comedic in a strange way if I think about it. But it was definitely a different and enjoyable read for me. I liked that people couldn't just hop on Google instead of using their own brain. :)
