Review: Heaven by Alexandra Adornetto

Heaven
Halo Series #4

Author: Alexandra Adornetto

Publication Date: August 21st, 2012

Publisher: Feiwel & Friends

Genre: Paranormal

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Bethany, an angel sent to Earth, and her mortal boyfriend, Xavier, have been to Hell and back. But now their love will be put to its highest test yet, as they defy Heavenly law and marry. They don’t tell Beth’s archangel siblings, Gabriel and Ivy, but the angels know soon enough, and punishment comes in a terrifying form: the Sevens, who are rogue angels bent on keeping Beth and Xavier apart, destroying Gabriel and Ivy, and darkening angelic power in the heavens. The only way Bethany and can elude the Sevens is to hide in the open, and blend in with other mortals their own age. Gabriel and Ivy set them up at college, where they can’t reveal their relationship, and where there is still danger around each corner. Will Bethany be called back to Heaven – forever – and face leaving the love of her life?

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed reading Heaven and wrapping up this series.  It tied up most of the loose ends, there was only one thing that left me unsatisfied and that was the ever-turbulent sort-of relationship between Bethany's best friend Molly and the Archangel Gabriel.  Other than that, I think that Heaven did an extraordinary job at tying up.
I enjoyed the change in dynamic after Bethany and Xavier got married.  Too bad their honeymoon involved college and them pretending to be brother and sister!  Their college life really got a few good laughs out of me and really put into perspective how much Bethany and Xavier have given up to be with each other.  If they hadn't fallen in love they would have both been able to have a regular college experience after high school with their peers.
Bethany grew up.  After being in Hell in the last book, she has certainly come into her own.  No longer the little angel we first got to know, Beth gets a bit more bite in Heaven.  Xavier is still a quick-tongued smart ass who is nothing but protective and tender to Beth and that is one of the things I love most about him.
Oh, and we get to see another side of Gabriel.  He certainly comes out of his shell in this book.
All-in-all, I think Heaven was pretty great.  I could totally see a spin-off series around Gabriel though, which I would pick up in an instant since he was one of my favourite characters.  If you haven't read Heaven yet, you should pick it up.  If you haven't read the series yet, I encourage you to look into it!

Teaser Tuesday (26)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by  MizB at Should be Reading.

-Share two 'teaser' sentences from somewhere on that page

-Share the Title and Author, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR if the like your  teaser :)

This week's teaser comes from:

"It was one of those moments where everything is right in the world. The grasshoppers sung lazily around us, hidden in the unkempt prairie grass that shimmered blue and green in the gentle breeze. We were young, high, happy, and laying beneath a perfect blue sky with the sun hot above. The air nearly hummed with anticipation, the realization that endless possibilities lay ahead of us, each of them offering nothing but freedom, excitement and abundant happiness. I grinned, lit a cigarette and shut my eyes.

I would take all they had to offer."

This is definitely a longer teaser than I usually give. But I really liked it and I wanted to share the whole thing. It came from the first chapter as I just started reading this book, but I am already looking forward to what lies in store :).

What are you teasing this week?

Review: Breaking the Devil's Heart by H.A Goodman

Breaking the Devil's Heart

Author: H.A Goodman

Publication Date: May 4th, 2012

Publisher: Outskirts Press, Inc

Genre: YA/Fantasy

GoodReads

Synopsis:

When Stewart and Layla recruit a demon to spy on the Devil, their decision takes them on whirlwind ride through the afterlife. Journey alongside this young couple in H. A. Goodman’s new novel, Breaking the Devil’s Heart, and join forces with a teenage Angel outcast to bankrupt Satan's underground Company and save Heaven from civil war. H. A. Goodman's Breaking the Devil’s Heart is a rollercoaster afterlife experience that tests a young couple's love, their grasp on reality, and the essence of human nature. What happens when Stewart and Layla tour Hell’s Marketing Department and Stock Exchange? What happens when their relationship is tested by Satan? This book is unlike anything you’ve ever read, or ever thought the afterlife might be like. Breaking the Devil’s Heart is an enlightening look into an alternate world, a new afterlife, and a profound journey inside the human conscience.

My Thoughts:  Breaking the Devil's Heart was nothing like what I expected when I opened it up. This is a battle between heaven and hell like you've never heard of or imagined before.  We get a brand new idea as to what happens after we die. Since no one really knows for sure, the ideas are really endless. But this one was well planned and thought out, really unique, and quite in depth.

Another thing I was not expecting was the darkness it contained. Of course when reading a book about hell and battles, you are expecting a certain level of evil and darkness. But at many times while reading this I was completely shocked,  horrified, disgusted, even a little physically nauseous. Most of the time it was a good thing, that sounds weird I know, but it was just good writing and it played into the story so well that it made sense to be feeling that way. But there were points where it went just a little to far for me. But these moments were few and far between.

The book continued to surprise me. Even when I thought I had it figured it, I totally didn't. I love when a book can totally knock you off your feet and make you stop and think...wait...what?!...really!? Reading this book was like a good workout for the mind. It was very deep, incredibly thought provoking, as well as inspirational and motivating.  On top of all that we got a few history lessons. Mostly of humanity's darker times. They were anything but boring though to say the least. More like giant eye openers.

In all, you can tell a lot of work and a mass amount of thought went into this story. It had it's lighter, happy moments, but mostly we walked in shadows and sadness. I do enjoy a dark story, but this one might have been borderline for me. It was full of unsuspecting plot twists, and lots of interesting, but also really sad, facts and information. I would probably recommend it, but I would definitely be wary of who I recommended it to, and I would definitely give a warning that they should be prepared to stomach some terrible things. but I did enjoy it, and i definitely respect the work put into the story!

Review: Confessions of an Angry Girl by Louise Rozett

Confessions of an Angry GIrl

Author: Louise Rozett

Publication Date: August 28, 2012

Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Genre: Contemporary

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Rose Zarelli, self-proclaimed word geek and angry girl, has some confessions to make…1. I'm livid all the time. Why? My dad died. My mom barely talks. My brother abandoned us. I think I'm allowed to be irate, don't you?

2. I make people furious regularly. Want an example? I kissed Jamie Forta, a badass guy who might be dating a cheerleader. She is now enraged and out for blood. Mine.

3. High school might as well be Mars. My best friend has been replaced by an alien, and I see red all the time. (Mars is red and "seeing red" means being angry—get it?)

Here are some other vocab words that describe my life: Inadequate. Insufferable. Intolerable.

(Don't know what they mean? Look them up yourself.)

My Thoughts: Confessions of An Angry Girl is a coming of age novel about a young girl in her first year of high school. She struggles with high school politics, her popularity-driven best friend, the recent death of her father and the bad-boy who she just can't seem to stay away from.

I liked Confessions of an Angry Girl mainly because of Rose. She is level-headed and reminds me a lot of me when I was her age. In fact, I saw a lot of me in her. Super responsible and doesn't really get why teenagers have to act so much like... teenagers. Why is everyone so obsessed with booze, parties and sex? And what is the point of cheerleaders who don't actually do anything athletic? You know the ones - no pyramids and back-flips for these girls!

Rose doesn't seem to be dealing with her stress and grieving in a healthy way. She has panic attacks, which she refuses to acknowledge as panic attacks. She also goes into rages (although, I would do the same thing in many of the situations).

The only thing that I didn't like about this book is that it seemed to just cut off. There was a massive build up and then we got to the last few pages and it seemed to cut-off right in the middle of the climax. It frustrated me, only to learn that there was a sequel set to be released in 2013. I just wish it had have gone father in the end. Even if it had gone farther, it would have been set up more beautifully for the sequel.

I've actually got a decent sized haul this week. It's been a while since I've gotten this many books in one week, and I only spent 11$!
Bought:
This is all 3 books in one, and I got it for 1$ :) Score!

I don't know how many of you read the "Little Golden Books" when you were younger, but I definitely did! I used to have a ton of them. So when I found this set of 55 of them for 10$, I absolutely had to get them for my kids! :)

Free
I actually went to a yard sale with the full intention of paying for these books. But, when I brought them up and asked how much she wanted she told me I could have them all for free. I was stunned  haha. I actually had 8 more books besides these that I got for my mom, so that's 16 free books! :)

For Review:

Much thanks to A.M Hargrove, Christine Anderson, & Holly@FullMoonBites for the review copies!
I'm especially excited for Deteminant! I love the Guardians of Vesturon Series so much!

Review: Dragon Night by Stephanie Campbell

Dragon Night

Author: Stephanie Campbell

Publication Date: November 17th, 20122

Publisher: Musa Publishing

Genre: Fantasy

GoodReads

Synopsis:

The only thing more shocking than discovering that dragons really exist is finding out that you are one. Ever since he could remember, Ford was treated cruelly by his parents, Liddy and Wicker Forks. He cannot figure out why they hate him so much. It is only when he discovers that his father isn’t really Wicker Forks but instead is a mysterious, red-eyed stranger that he goes on a quest to find his true identity—and much, much more. As he heads forward down the path of danger and illusion, he uncovers a world that he had never imagined, a world of dragons. Ford must decide who he is—a dragon or a boy—and whichever path he chooses will be his future for forever. After all, once you are a dragon, there is no going back.

My Thoughts: Dragon Night was a pretty good story.  I like the idea behind it, I like the characters and I love the dragons! But, somehow this story just didn't make me fall in love with it. I guess there were just times where it felt a little slow, kind of like there was just a bit too much detail? I'm no really sure, that's just how it felt for me. That doesn't mean a whole lot for me though, because there are dragons!! I was born in the year of the dragon, so I really like them and am fascinated with them!

So Ford, I had to feel sorry for the kid. His parents pretty much treat him like crap and he only has one real friend. Then he finds out, to his pleasure at the time, that Wicker isn't his dad. So he decides he has to go find his dad, especially since there is something weird going on with his body. So off he goes, not even really knowing where exactly to look. Then all of a sudden, he finds out that he's a dragon, clearly something he got from his father. Poor kid just doesn't know what to think, his like kind of sucks.

I did really like the dragons and the draconics (what For is, half human, half dragon!) They were fairly different from any of the dragons that I've read about. They are magical, and the pure dragons are extremely evil and treat the draconics as slaves. Clearly they need a savior,  maybe Ford will be able to help out!

There is quite  a bit of action in this book, how can there not be with dragons. But again, there were parts that dragged a bit for me. Overall though, I did enjoy it, and I will be recommending it to fantasy lovers. So if you like dragons, you should definitely check this one out. It's a pretty short and quick read!

Review: The Skyhorse by HL Carpenter

The Skyhorse

Author: HL Carpenter

Publication Date: April 6th, 2012

Publisher: Musa Publishing

Genre: Fantasy

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Fourteen year old Tovi thinks finding a flying horse is fabulous luck - until a mysterious stranger says finders aren’t always keepers. When fourteen year old Tovi Taggert moves to Honeysuckle Hollow to take care of her grandmother, she has a hard time fitting in. For one thing, she’s been tagged with the hated nickname Too-Tall Tovi. For another, everyone at Honeysuckle Hollow High believes Tovi played the Choking Game with someone else’s boyfriend – and made out with him besides. As if she doesn’t have enough problems, after the latest stand-off in the school hallway, Tovi finds a gorgeous speckled egg nestled in a feather lined nest. She takes the egg home – and mysterious visitors begin appearing almost immediately. Even more worrisome, whatever is inside the egg starts chipping its way out. When the egg hatches, revealing a winged horse, Tovi’s troubles multiply. As she struggles to return the horse to the magical land where he belongs, Tovi must make a courageous decision – and accept what that decision will cost her.

My Thoughts: I might be a sucker for stories that involve animals. Horses being one of the big ones, I've always wanted a horse of my own so really enjoyed reading about the adorable Zephyr. Look at that little cutie on the cover! This was a pretty quick and easy read. It's a bit younger than what I generally read, I think I would peg it as a younger YA/MG, the 12-14 range. But it was still quite enjoyable.

The Skyhorse follows poor "too-tall" Tovi. She's the new girl in town, the one who happens to be almost seven feet tall. All Tovi wants to be accepted, but it's hard to blend in when you tower over everyone. Tovi  makes a butterfly wish for a friend and a giant sinkhole opens up underneath her. Next thing she knows, she's thrust into a strange and wild adventure to return a young winged colt to his home in another world.

I found the story flows pretty quickly, I enjoyed the writing style and the pace. I'm not a huge fan of slow books, so this was a good one for me. I would most definitely recommend this to a middle grade audience. There are a few lessons to be learned (like not caving to peer pressure to be "cool"!) If you like light fantasy and are looking for a quick read, this might be worth checking out for you!

Publisher: New American Library

My Thoughts:  Those black roses are gorgeous!  I feel like the girl on the cover is Thumbelina in a beautiful red dress.  The roses get me and I could really just stare at them all day.  The red contrasts, which draws your eyes to the cover.

Review: Die for Me by Amy Plum

Die for Me
(Reverants #1)

Author: Amy Plum

Publication Date: May 10, 2011

Publisher: HarperTeen

Genre: Fantasy

GoodReads

Synopsis:

In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.
When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.
Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

My Thoughts: Oh, I love a good book about something paranormal that hasn't already been done a million-and-one times. Revenants are something almost completely new and intriguing. I see them as a mix between Zombies and Guardian Angels/Demons - which is so weird but it totally works in this case!

Kate is scarred from her parents tragic deaths which caused her and her sister to leave their home in America to live with their grandparents in Paris. So, naturally, the person that Kate falls for is doomed to die over and over in a number of gruesome ways. Oh, fate is cruel sometimes. I guess it helps that Vincent is absolutely gorgeous and an almost perfect gentlemen.

In fact, I love all of the revenant boys.  Even the old ones (in a grandfatherly manner).  It took me a little time to warm up to a couple of them, but it was well worth the wait!

Paris in and of itself is a gorgeous backdrop for any novel and has a life of it's own. It is beautifully described, making the book all the more amazing. I actually felt like I was strolling down the streets of Paris, seeing the Eiffel Tower and visiting artisans. Just thinking about it brings a smile to my face.

I regret not buying and reading this book before. It's cover always got me (beautiful!) and it has been on my "to-read" list for what seems like forever! I would recommend it to pretty much everyone I know. I can't wait to start the next one. There is definitely still more to learn about Kate, Vincent and the reverants and I can't wait to find out more.

Waiting on Wednesday (33)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly awaiting.

The Casual Vacancy
by J.K Rowling
Expected Publication: September 27th, 2012

Summary:
When Barry Fairweather dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

Fans all over the world are holding their breaths for this book! Rowling's first release since Harry Potter, and it's an adult book! For those of us that grew up reading Harry Potter it's absolutely perfect! Her last story was one that will be loved and revered for ages, and rightly so. I cannot wait to see what she brings us next!! I am more than sure it will be something wonderful! :D

Review: The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

The Iron King

Author: Julie Kagawa

Publication Date: February 1st, 2010

Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Genre: YA/Fantasy/Romance

GoodReads

Synopsis:

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined. Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home. When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change. But she could never have guessed the truth - that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

My Thoughts: After finished The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa, I was really craving some more of her writing. I had this one sitting on my shelf waiting for me so it was a no-brainer what my next read would be. And now after reading this book, I have added Julie to my list of must-read authors. I gotta get more of her books and keep my eyes out for new ones.

There is no boring introduction, or slow start in this book. We start off right away getting emotionally punched in the gut by events that happened to the main character Meghan. And may I just say, doesn't she just have the coolest, best, name ever?! Ha, I was seriously excited when I seen we shared the same name. I see lots of Meghan's, but usually they don't have the "h".  Anyway, moving on. I was immediately drawn to Meghan. Right away I just wanted to be her friend, to comfort her, and to hug her. She has a sad family history, with the loss of her father at a young age. When her mom re-marries, the new guy is nice enough. But it seems like he forgets Meghan even exists half the time. If being invisible at home isn't enough, at school she is rejected and picked on brutally. Luckily, she isn't completely alone. She has a best friend named Robbie who I also liked right away. He is so jovial, optimistic, funny, and very supportive and kind to Meghan.  He also carries this mysterious quality. I could tell there was more we didn't know about him and I couldn't wait to find out what it was.

It wasn't long until all the fun began, and we found out just what Robbie was hiding from Meghan. From then on it's a non-stop roller-coaster of fairy tale adventure and we're riding front seat right along side Meghan. The story was written in such a way that it really felt like you were right there experiencing everything with her, it was incredibly exciting and scary at times to say the least. Mostly the latter. Due to a certain event, Meghan must travel into the faery world. Known as Nevernever. What a perfect name eh? The Nevernever is a wonderfully beautiful and terrifying place. Part of me would die to go there, but at the same time I probably would die if I did. So I guess I'm content to just read about it for now. During the fantastical adventure we came across so many beings; Ogres, Trolls, Giant Hounds, Talking Cats, Goblins, Sirens, Elves, Faerys, Phoukas, and even more! It was like so many awesome fantasy stories combined, making the ultimate Faery story to rival them all. There was definite obvious inspiration from Shakespeare. Some of the stories it reminded me of were Narnia, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and if you've ever seen the movie Labrynthe  with David Bowie in it, it reminded me a lot of that as well. While I did find likenesses from these other awesome stories, this story was still unique and sits in a league of it's own.

The other two characters I loved were Grimalkin and Ash. Grimalkin is  a cat, and the definition of cats at their finest. He is proud, reserved, clever, and really only speaks when he sees the need to input his two cents. Yeah, of course he talks! He's the most epic cat companion anyone could ask for, and Meghan is lucky enough to cross paths with him inside Nevernever. Although his motives and goals are never really clear, he tags along and helps because he doesn't want to miss out on all the adventure and action. If I could be any one in the story, I would be Grimalkin. Then there's Ash, he's the prince of a rival Fey group. He is incredibly gorgeous, strong, smart, and loyal. Unfortunately he's also severely deadly and Meghan is on his list of enemies. Of course this complicates things the love story comes into play, since Ash is the one Meghan has feelings for, oh dear. Despite how complicated that relationship is and could be, I am still rooting for them! I'm a little of a hopeless romantic, and their story has so much romantic potential!

Again, I'm leaving you hanging with story line. I just really don't like to give anything away. But this story covered so many emotions. I laughed out loud at parts, I was on the verge of tears in others. Sometimes I was holding my breath with fear, and some parts even made me feel a bit queasy. There are some gory parts, but I do enjoy a little bit of gore in my stories! I definitely recommend this book! I am kicking myself so hard now for not buying the rest of the series at the same time. I know what my next purchase will be when I make it to the book store next! I'm so glad I came across Julie's books, I'm eager to read more of her work and I wish I had discovered her sooner! Great things have come form her and I'm sure we can expect even more greatness in the future!

'Her eyes glittered like chips of diamond, and she smiled, making her even more beautiful and terrifying. "But I am feeling merciful tonight. Perhaps I will not cut out it's tongue and feed it to the hounds. Perhaps." '

This is the book to rival all faery books I think haha. What a great read! I definitely need to get the rest of the books in the series! Review up for this one tomorrow :).

What are you teasing this week?
